The Delaware Association for the Blind is proud to be an affiliate agency of the United Way of Delaware, and the support of our many friends through the United Way is greatly appreciated. Designated contributions through the United Way help DAB to provide its many programs of education, enrichment, and recreation to the blind and visually impaired of Delaware. Whether you have benefited from the DAB Store, DAB’s Peer Support Service, the Volunteer Taping Program, Camp Sunnybrook, or our many recreation programs, we hope you will share with your family and friends how the Delaware Association for the Blind has made a difference in your life.
DAB STORE TO TAKE PART IN DVI TECH FAIR
The staff of the DAB Store will take part in the Technology Fair sponsored by the Division for the Visually Impaired on Friday, October 15 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. The Technology Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event will take the place of our annual October visit to the Modern Maturity Center so look for information about the DAB Store display and the DVI Technology Fair in the upcoming weeks. As always, we look forward to seeing you there!
2011 LP CALENDARS COMING SOON!
We anticipate having our 2011 large print calendars in the DAB Store in early September. DAB’s large print calendars are 17”X24” with big bold numbers and give you lost of room for writing in your appointments and special dates.
FALL ACTIVITIES

We will begin taking reservations on Wednesday, August 4. Activities are on a first come first served basis, so call as soon as possible to avoid missing out on an activity you are interested in. Door-to-door transportation is available. The September 11 trip to Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and the September 24 trip to the Phillies game were listed in the summer newsletter so check on ticket availability for these trips when you call.Door-to-door transportation is available.
When calling Activities Coordinator Judy Engelgau, please leave a complete message on the answering machine. New Castle County residents who need to speak with Judy can call her toll free at 1-888-757-0880; however, if you live in New Castle County, you should not call Judy to sign up for activities. Please only call Judy between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
When you sign up for an activity where prepayment is required, please remember to send your payment by the due date listed at the end of the activity. If your payment has not been received by this date, we will give your spot on the list to a person on the waiting list. If you are on the waiting list, you will be called to let you know when to send your payment.
DAB’s cancellation policy and Theatre Etiquette Policy can be accessed by following the links at the end of this newsletter. If you are not familiar with these policies, please read them carefully. Saturday, September 11: DUTCH APPLE DINNER THEATRE presents “GeorgeM!” See the man who called himself a “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, in the tap-dancing, stars and stripes salute to America and Broadway. “George M!” pays tribute to George M. Cohan, who wrote “You’re A Grand Old Flag”, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “Over There”, and more. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. for a 1:15 matinee. $48 due August 12.
Saturday, September 18: SPORTS LEGENDS MUSEUM in Baltimore 12:30 p.m. The Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards opened in 2005. It occupies the basement and first floor of the station with 22,000 square feet of artifacts and interactive exhibits, transforming Camden Station into one of the most spectacular sports museums in America. The one and a half hour guided tour takes you on a walk through Maryland’s sport history. Exhibits include: Orioles Hall of Fame, Almost Religion: Baltimore Colts, Johnny Unitas: Best There Ever Was, Baltimore Ravens: A New Tradition, College Game Day: Sis Boom Bah!, and many others. Tour includes a visit to the Locker Room, where you can try on a game-worn jersey, and an opportunity to participate in an interactive soccer game. $7.50. Bring lunch to eat in the van. Early dinner at Woody’s Crabhouse on the way home. Menus in Braille and large print.
Friday, September 24: Join the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES in the final weekend of the regular season versus their arch-rivals the New York Mets! Seats in the lower level outfield. 7 p.m. game. $33 due August 18.
Saturday, October 2: CHESAPEAKE CELTIC FESTIVAL in Furnace Town, Md. 12-5 p.m. $18 adult. From the opening ceremonies at noon to the closing ceremonies at 4:30 p.m., there is continuous entertainment on the Festival Stage, Celtic music at its best. Explore the grounds and the many events, including collie shepherding, bagpipes, costumed artisans in period garb, blacksmiths, broom making, woodworkers, a Celtic marketplace, whiskey tasting and wine tasting, and lots of ethnic foods as well as Eastern shore delicacies. Sighted guide recommended so that you can take in the events that interest you at your own pace.
Sunday, October 17: CANDLELIGHT DINNER THEATRE presents “Little Shop of Horrors.”This popular rock musical about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood comes to Candlelight for the fall of 2010. The music, in the style of early 1960’s rock and roll, doo-wop, and Motown, includes several show-stopping numbers such as “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and the title song. Doors open 1 p.m. Show at 3 p.m. $49 due September 15.
Saturday, October 23: Since opening in 1997, QVC STUDIO PARK in West Chester, PA,has become a popular destination for thousands of visitors interested in experiencing live television at its best. The QVC Studio Tour is a one-of-a-kind guided walking tour through the fantastic world of multimedia retailing. At this state-of-the-art broadcasting facility, guests will experience how QVC products are sourced, tested, brought to life on air, and delivered to millions of QVC customers. There are views into QVC’s more than 55,000 square feet of studio space, where guests may be able to watch QVC programs in progress. 1 p.m. guided tour. One hour fifteen minutes in length, two and a half hours with shopping time. $9 per person. Dinner at the Lonestar Restaurant in north Wilmington on the way home. Bring lunch to eat in the van.
Friday, November 5: WILMINGTON AND WESTERN RAILROAD HAYRIDE EXPRESS. Enjoy a one hour round trip evening ride through the Red Clay Valley on an original flatcar converted especially for hayrides. This event is powered by one of Wilmington and Western’s first-generation diesel locomotives. You can choose between a flatcar with hay bales and an open car with benches. $13 adults, $12 seniors over 60, $11 age 2-12. 7 p.m. departure. Early dinner before the hayride at Grotto’s Pizza. Money for train due October 15.
Saturday, November 13: WILMINGTON DRAMA LEAGUE prepares to give you the “Razzle-Dazzle” in the form of the smash musical “CHICAGO!”, winner of six Tony awards. It is the universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz, with one show-stopping tune after another. A satire set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the story is a look at corruption and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.” Show at 8 p.m., with Sensory Seminar at 7:30. Tickets $11. Programs in Braille and large print. Dinner before the show at the Golden Dove Restaurant.
Saturday, November 20: MADAME TUSSAUD’S WAX MUSEUM in Washington, DC. Enjoy the excitement of live horse racing in The Grove, the outdoor picnic area located in the most picturesque area of the park. You can bring your own picnic or take advantage of the sandwich and BBQ stands. The Grove is right by the track. Horses parade through on their way to the starting gate. Folding chairs and/or blankets are recommended in case it is crowded and picnic table seating is limited. If you prefer to attend the slots, you will need to bring a sighted guide. There is no admission charge; $2 transportation charge collected on day of trip.
DAB ARTS & CRAFTS PROGRAM:
(NCC) The New Castle County craft class will resume on Tuesday, September 14 for Group A and on September 28 for Group B. Classes are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second or fourth Tuesday of the month depending on your group. There is no charge, and transportation is available. Call the DAB office to let us know if you wish to attend.
(KSC) The DAB arts & crafts class for Kent and Sussex County clients will again be held this year on the second Tuesday of each month beginning on Tuesday, September 14. The class will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue in Dover. Please take note of the change in time and location. This activity is free and some transportation is available. Please call the DAB Office at 1-888-777-3925 if you wish to participate in this activity.
BINGO
Bingo at Landis Lodge will resume Thursday, September 16. Anyone able to use large print or braille bingo cards is welcome to attend. We play on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 9:15 p.m. There is no charge, and some transportation in New Castle County is available. Call the DAB office to let us know if you wish to attend.
(NCC) MUSIC APPRECIATION CLASS:
DAB plans to continue its class in music appreciation in New Castle County if there is sufficient interest. The class meets at Landis Lodge on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Classes are offered from October until early June. Please call the DAB office if you are interested in participating in this activity.
