Our History
Our roots go back to 1909, when C. Reginald Van Trump, who was blind, began work for the blind in Delaware by founding the Commission for the Blind. The Commission was run by a group of concerned private citizens and utilized mainly private funds.
The Delaware Association for the Blind was incorporated in 1948 as a means of continuing to use private funds to supplement services offered by the Commission for the Blind, now a State agency. In 1973, after the creation of a cabinet form of government in Delaware, DAB became a totally separate agency and moved to its present headquarters at 800 West Street.
Landis Lodge, begun in 1930 on the property of Mrs. Irenee duPont, was moved to its present location at Camp Sunnybrook in 1957. Camp Sunnybrook, which had been leased from Emily Bissell Hospital, was officially acquired in 1967. Sunnybrook Pool was built at the same location in 1968.
The Delaware Association for the Blind continues to offer programs and services unavailable from government agencies. It is a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) private non-profit agency and all contributions are tax deductible.
